She watched Gunny’s gaze pass from studied indifference to something like suspicion, then his brows pulled together and he suggested, “Sunshine, ma’am?”
She smiled, “Among other things. If you do take leave, let Coates know the shape of things. We’ll be here when you get back, whatever you choose.”
Five times Gunny and Tiner were told they should get married, and one time they thought about it themselves.

The junior officer smiled sunnily, said, “I’m sure.” And breezed out of the room.
