“Did you decide to tell us because of what Scott Hunter did?” The question was gentle, almost as if his dad was afraid to spook him. “What he did was very brave.”
“I had been thinking about it for some time, but that was definitely one of the reasons that made me do it now.” He took a deep breath. “After I saw him doing that, all I could think about was not having to hide anymore. Not from you, not from the team... not from the world.”
He could see the fantasy in his head: him and Ilya walking around, hand-in-hand, traveling and having fun. Being together in the light of day, not just in dark hotel rooms, having to be quiet, hiding.
“Would you want to? Come out, publicly, I mean.” There was worry in his mother’s voice.
He thought about it, really, without letting the fear cloud his judgment.
“Yes.”
