You feel your breath catch—not from surprise, but from recognition.
“Yes,” you say, not looking away. “Sometimes I wonder if it would’ve made it easier. But maybe… it wouldn’t have meant as much.”
His voice lowers, almost as if he’s afraid of what he’s about to admit. “I think I started noticing you before I meant to. Before this war.”
Your fingers tighten slightly around the stem of your glass. “I think I hoped you would.”
The admission passes between you like the brush of fingertips—barely there, but unmistakable.
Neither of you moves, but the distance between you feels impossibly small now.
“I kept thinking it would fade,” he says. “Whatever this… pull is.”
You nod slowly. “And?”
He lets out a breath of something between a laugh and surrender. “It never did.”
A pause.
