It’s cruel that he can’t lay beside him forever, spend the rest of their lives in this bed ‘till death takes them, because there’s no place in which he wants to die other than in his arms. Cruel that they can’t mold together, that he can’t feel his skin connect with Steve’s in a way that won’t let them separate again, that makes the passage of time equal on both of their bodies.
He wants to stay and watch as wrinkles and dark spots appear on his face, proof of the years, a time he spent only with him; wants to count his moles and freckles until he can trace them with his eyes closed, keep track as new ones take shape on his skin and memorize them with the others.

But Jayce doesn’t seem the type to want Viktor’s ire. Something about his expression, so open until now, is guarded — wounded. Viktor squares himself and makes a bold guess.

The energy between them snaps taught as piano wire. Jayce looks at Viktor with open wonder, his mouth falling open. It’s as if he’s been seen for the first time, though now that he’s said it Viktor finds the idea laughably obvious. A man who sought out someone whose life he could improve doesn’t do that for nothing. Viktor is so relieved to find something self-serving under Jayce’s idealism.
“I would,” Jayce says, his voice a strained whisper.
