    From this angle, Nene can’t make out Hanako’s face, but she sees the way his boney shoulders tense at whatever words Tsukasa whispers in his ear. Tsukasa meets Nene’s eye over Hanako’s shoulder and smiles with all his teeth; in the midday sun, they glint white and sharp.

    “If you won’t do it,” he tells Hanako, loud enough for Nene to hear, close enough for her to trace the words on his lips, “then I will.”
