The question had a simple enough answer.
Buck said, “Back when I was at the academy, we had three Evans in my class. It was easier to go with Buck.” And then, later, “It’s just from my former surname. My maiden name, I guess you could call it.” He doesn't explain to the probie why he chose to take on his husband's surname and rid himself of his old one.
