Summary
Hermann's eyes burn. The world threatens to fall apart. He has lost everything in one fell swoop: prosthetic, Newt, chance of freedom.
And yet—
It doesn't.
It can't.
Because the salt might be dripping down his cheeks, but he can taste iron against his teeth.
For so long, Hermann believed that even if his father forced him to make the weapons, Hermann was working to get out of this situation. That he was working to use one of his trips to the village, one of the few times that the lock was undone, to escape his father and his fate as nothing more than an accomplice to terror.
But here his father goes, proving that Hermann is worth nothing.
And Hermann has to do everything he can to make up for what his mistakes caused.
He has to speak to the prince.
(Hermann has spent his life being forced to make weapons to kill dragons for his father's war, but he has found some small relief in writing secret letters to a dragonologist he's slowly falling in love with.

Hermann Gottlieb doesn't have many memories of his mother. Anyone with a passing knowledge of neurology could tell you that long-term memories don’t start to form until you are between three and four years old, after all.
And Hermann Gottlieb is no neurologist, that must be said.
But he does know a thing or two about hospitals. About the bright lights and the smell of antiseptic and despair on the air and the way that places like these suck all of the hope out of you as you watch someone that you love get carved away.
Hermann Gottlieb’s first memory is of the hospital. Of the blinding white lights. Of the way his mother had looked in that hospital bed, eyes sunken, skin thin and white as paper.
(Of the way it felt to pray the Mi Sheberach and get no answer.)
He cannot let Newt join that memory. He cannot carve Newt Geiszler’s name into a headstone.
He cannot sit shiva for Newt.
He refuses to.
So Hermann will do whatever it takes to not end up in another graveyard.
(When Newt is on the verge of dying after a kaiju attack, Hermann only has one place he can go to get the money needed to fast-track a new liver in time: his father.)

Of course Hermann’s final moments are drilling down to just this.
The tears on his cheeks are the only source of warmth, but they rapidly disappear under the onslaught of the storm.
Even his tears are stolen, salt into the sea, just as his body will soon be once he dies.
But then, cutting through all of cold rain, suddenly something warm and soft, even tender, settles against Hermann’s arm.
Hermann’s gaze falls on the hand on his, a familiar arm covered in the bright colors and lines of kaiju, a prayer made fucking flesh.
Hermann blinks, perhaps to clear the water from his eyes, perhaps to blink away the hallucination brought on by the press of the water and cold against his skin. After all, it’s a well-known symptom of hypothermia that people will hallucinate that they are getting warmer as they get closer to the end- that must be the reason why he sees Newton Geiszler in front of him.
(When a "prank" meant to teach Hermann his place goes wrong, he ends up trapped outside of the Shatterdome as a storm rolls in. Hermann is certain all is lost- but there is one person out there that refuses to let Hermann suffer alone.
Damn Newton Geiszler and his reckless heroism.)
