Bradley died on a Tuesday midday, answering a call to break up a fight downtown where someone had flashed a gun. I was supposed to be there, but I was hungover. I didn't call out, I just didn't come. I'd heard my walkie-talkie buzz when he'd called for backup, and I'd quieted it, then swallowed a Tylenol for my headache and crashed.
It's not really my fault. He wasn't calling for me; he knew I wasn't there to answer, but I hate myself. He'd handled these things before; we both had. I thought he had it, I did. I hate every bottle in my house, every chaser, every glass.
After I'd crashed the car that time, I remember he'd told me that he had a feeling ‘this’ would kill him before it killed me. I didn't see then why anyone had to die, but I see now that it is inevitable, and now it's already happened, so I can't do it to myself anymore.
The unfair bit will be maybe someday in the future I'll get better and die in a completely normal way, but Bradley will still be gone, a victim of me.
