Ed comes looking for Stede when he doesn't show up at the dock. When Chauncey shoots Ed, Stede has no choice but to take him to the one place where there's actually a chance they might not be immediately killed or captured: the house he once shared with Mary, Alma, and Louis.
(In which there's a lot of hurt/comfort as Stede tends to an injured Ed, Stede and Ed grow closer as they deal with the various forms of guilt they carry, and Mary and Doug get an unexpected front-row seat to the unlikely romance between the greatest pirate of all time and Mary's sort-of-ex, very-much-not-dead husband.)

In a world where one cannot die until they have made contact with their soulmate, a single touch can change a life. Grantaire knows this; he has watched it happen, just as he has watched the wounds on his wrists seal themselves and vanish almost before his stroke has finished. On the other side of Paris, Enjolras has watched it happen, too. He has seen bullets rend flesh; has seen proof that having someone to cradle you as you bleed will do nothing to save your life. Combeferre shrugged, but Courfeyrac, half-draped over Ferre’s lap, scrunched his face up thoughtfully.
“An hour?” he guessed, nudging his head against Combeferre’s hand like a cat. “Perhaps longer.”
Enjolras was already half out of his seat. “Has anyone thought to check if he’s still conscious?”
“It’s Grantaire,” said Joly from Enjolras’ other side, where he sat curled around Musichetta, “and it’s New Year’s. What did you expect?”
(It has been three years since Enjolras last attended the New Year's Eve party at the Musain, and he doesn't know what's brought him here tonight, but he does know one thing: someone is missing from the festivities.)
