He stopped; he was not sure how to make himself any clearer, and the Saracen was not evidently interested in conveying anything other than his loathing. Nicolò waited, and after a long, uncomfortable moment, the Saracen finally responded. He spat an incomprehensible sentence in Arabic, heavy with disdain, and thrust his bound hands forward. A demand to be released? That would make sense. Nicolò hesitated.
“Do you understand me?” he pressed, repeating his gestures. “We are the same. We go together? Away from here? Both of us?”
The Saracen repeated also; his Arabic phrase, and the twisting of his wrists against their bindings. Nicolò nodded, and crouched before him.“I am going to free you,” he said. “Please help me.”

Nicky signs up for a website that will match him to his perfect spouse. Since leaving the church he's been terribly lonely, and uses the website as a last resort. The algorithm matches him with the man of his dreams, but when he arrives on Joe's doorstep it becomes apparent that Joe doesn't want him. Nicky understands, however. Why would a man so perfect as Joe want someone like him?

Eilat is several weeks of hard riding away, and from there Yusuf is insistent they take a merchant ship to Aden. Nicolo soon loses all feeling in his behind and thighs. Yusuf continues to alight from his horse as if having awoken from a pleasant nap. “It’s all about rhythm,” he tells Nicolo, moving his hips to demonstrate. Nicolo contemplates killing him, for whatever good that will do.

Summary
Nicky sets the clock on his bench, and murmurs soft explanations to it about the repairs. It’s a never-ending wonder to him to consider the love stored in wood and plaster, oil paint and clay, lodged in the curlicues of fine metalwork and the too-deep residue of furniture polish. He gently removes the shards of broken glass from the frame, unscrews the clock face and walks it over to Nile’s bench, and spends a time simply touching each wonderful detail of the casing as if to reassure the wood of his good intentions.
“I’m almost jealous,” Joe says softly, and Nicky looks up to see him standing on the other side of the bench, the shoulders of his jacket splattered with raindrops. He’s smiling fondly, hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans.

If you proposition him, and he turns you down, I’ll know you haven’t been taking advantage of people, and we can move on from there.”
