At the sound, Juliette’s head snaps up unconsciously. Just as quickly she tucks her chin back to her chest, cheeks burning, and thank God Calliope is facing the other way, because the way she zeroed in on Calliope like she was trying to see through her was not subtle at all. But jeez, her heart is racing. For the first time since Juliette has known her—in this case, ‘known’ being used as an extremely generous way of saying that Juliette has seen Calliope—the steady thrum is gone.
And then Juliette smiles. It’s a small one. More of a smirk, really, because oh. Calliope just told a lie. And now her heart is pounding away.
