“So tell me again why we’re going to see this?” Sonny asked, fingers threaded through Rafael’s as they made their way through the throngs of people near Times Square.
“A client gave them to Rita,” Rafael answered, sidestepping a Mickey Mouse who had seen better days. “But she offered them to me because this show is, and I quote, ‘too gooey’ for her.”
Sonny chuckled, politely declining an offer for cheap comedy show tickets before looking over at Rafael. “But not too gooey for you?” He didn’t know anything about the Broadway show, but he’d seen the movie more times than he’d care to admit—a consequence of having three sisters—and it really didn’t seem like Rafael’s thing.
Rafael shrugged. “You know I enjoy theater in all forms, and these are great seats. Plus, you can’t really base an opinion on Rita’s taste. All she really likes are the operas where everyone dies.”

Sonny tapped his beer bottle cap rapidly on the marble top of their kitchen island while he watched Rafael check the locks on their doors for the third time. It seemed more like he was trying to buy time before he had to explain to Sonny what was going on than actually trying to assure their safety.
He knew for a fact that was what he was doing when he took his time selecting a bottle of wine, taking longer to uncork it and pour a glass than should even be possible. Finally, he leaned against the counter, glass in hand, eyeing Sonny carefully. “You’re sure you’re not a cop anymore?”
It wasn’t what Sonny was expecting and he laughed mirthlessly. “Pretty sure fleeing the country with an international art thief means I’m off the force.”

“But where’s the fun in that?” Rafael reached for him again, trying to pull him close, but Sonny took a step back.
“Stop.” He reached to the back of his belt, removing his cuffs. “I have to take you in.”
“You know those aren’t going anywhere near my wrists unless they’re hooked to a headboard,” Rafael practically growled and Sonny hated himself a little when he felt his blood run south at the memory.

His work rarely got the recognition it deserved since most people, especially those who were wealthy and arrogant, didn’t like to brag about the fact that they’d been burgled. But thanks to Rita Calhoun, who loved to antagonize everyone, including the police who were trying to help her, Rafael had his first bit of press in quite some time.
He would have to cut out the article and add it to the scrapbook.
It was with more enjoyment than necessary that he read the short article detailing the theft and NYPD’s ineptitude, but when he got to the name of the detective in charge of the case he paused, finding himself curious. Picking up his phone from where it rested next to his coffee cup, he did a quick search for Detective Sonny Carisi.

“You’re Rafael Barba. Assistant District Attorney for Manhattan,” he answered and Rafael let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. At least until Carisi smiled so wide and happy and added, “My husband.”
The words were so alien to him that he honestly couldn’t respond for a second, just kept staring at Carisi’s happy face and at the stitches in his head while he saw flashes of blood on the car window. He couldn’t imagine his expression but knew it was something less than comforting as he watched Carisi’s face fall, his eyebrows draw together.
“What?” Carisi asked finally, eyes flitting to the nurse still hovering in the corner of the room. “What’s the matter?”

“What, no mockery?” Rafael asked, the tips of his ears burning red as he fumbled to return his phone to his pocket. “No snide comment about flirting with the NYPD equivalent of the pool boy?”
Rita chose her words very, very carefully.
“I mean, we’ve all been there,” she said blithely with an easy, unconcerned shrug. “And the NYPD equivalent of the pool boy is fine for a temporary distraction.” She paused and took a calculated sip of her martini. “But it’s not as if you’re planning anything long-term with him. After all, it wouldn’t be right.”
Rafael frowned. “What do you mean?” he asked warily.
Rita gave him her best, most condescending look. “Rafael, you’re a Harvard-educated lawyer who could have your pick of law firms if you’d just get off your moral high horse,” she said with patronizing patience. “Harvard-educated lawyers don’t date cops who graduated from, what, community college?”

“Shit,” Sonny whispered as the engine light, oil light, and another light he was unsure of all started blinking at him.
The car stuttered before coming to a stop.
“That’s not funny, Carisi,” Rafael warned, ghost of a smile still on his face, like he really wanted to believe this was a joke.
Sonny turned the key in the ignition a few times, but nothing happened
“Carisi?” Rafael’s voice sounded the most uncertain he’d ever heard it, and he felt his heart sink.
“I’m sure it’s a quick fix.” He popped the hood before sliding out of the car, phone light lit up as a torch.

Summary
After the Terrance Reynolds case, everyone is angry at Barba and is making it known, but when Barba comes to convince a victim to testify, they learn that they don't really know Barba.
After secretly listening in on the conversation the squad learns some information they were never meant to know and no one know what to do, least of all Sonny.
Sonny is unsure of what to do, he’s had a crush on Barba for a while and was about to come clean and he knows, he knows, that what happened to Rafael shouldn’t stop him from saying anything, but he’s terrified of hurting Barba who still seems very affected by his past. Little does he know, he's causing Barba more hurt on top of an already too heavy load.
