Summary
Fyodor lay his head over Nikolai's heart, considering quietly. Nikolai gave him the time, combing his fingers through his hair slowly. His husband tended to process emotions slowly and in complete silence. He reminded Nikolai of this wind-up bird toy he'd owned as a child. It was supposed to sing a lullaby when one turned the screw on its back, but one of Nikolai's younger siblings had thrown it across the living room during a tantrum, and from that day forward there was a delay in the music starting. The grating hum of churning metalwork could be heard from inside the bird for several seconds before it would erupt into melodious chimes. Fyodor was currently in the delay state. Nikolai, contrary to popular belief, was a patient man. He would wait for centuries if that was how long it took Fyodor to sing.
