The hand is back, gripping tight again and this time it lifts Steve clean up in the air, feet dangling uselessly.
‘Master is Father and Father would not red trail to one like you,’ Eddie says, deceptively soft but it’s clearly a warning. ‘Echo Three is Father’s best weapon. You…’ he sneers, ‘are meat.’
Incredibly, Steve rallies enough to spit in Eddie’s face.
‘Fucking eat me then,’ Steve chokes out.

Steve frowns, reaching behind to feel where they once were but is met with only knobbly bones and sharp shoulders. ‘I miss them.’
‘I know you do.’ Eddie nuzzles his cheek. ‘You loved me first as a winged thing, pathetic and small.’
Despite himself, Steve grins. ‘I did.’
‘Do you love me now, in this form?’
A sobering feeling settles in his bones, bringing clarity to the moment, reality. They’re in Steve’s penthouse, the kitchen. There is still blood and viscera, black and grey. Steve is naked. Eddie is not.
