She doesn’t really have one for him. “...the Menagerie girls. On the corner of Pauwinsteeg and Leeuwstraat, by the salon,” she gets out in a rush as his eyebrow raises. “I just…I didn’t realize.” She says it like it’s her fault.

Jesper says it must be blackmail. Maybe murder. There’s no other way Kaz Brekker could already be holding a full professorship at the University of Ketterdam, no matter how many books he’s written. Inej, trapped by an adjunct’s contract which is the only thing standing between her and deportation, is willing to risk the obvious dangers of his company in exchange for the advantages, professional and otherwise. But when the department’s budget comes up suspiciously short, Inej’s job is on the line, and Kaz isn’t ready to let her go without a fight.
