“We’re both lucky that Charles doesn’t give a damn about anything but drug busts,” Rio murmurs pointedly. “Neither of us need to go to court for a fucking domestic right now.”
“Oh, please, like any of that would hold up in court,” Agatha scoffs sharply. “That was the most illegal arrest I’ve ever seen, heard of, or been a part of, Special Agent.”
Rio glares at her. “Actually, it was quite legal. You physically assaulted a government agent.” Rio pauses, narrowing her eyes as she adds, “twice.”
“Maybe next time don’t lean into a purps car,” she advises with a light shrug. Rio stares at her, lip steadily bleeding. Shifting on her feet, Agatha clears her throat and tosses her hands in the air. Agatha looks at her as if to say, ‘what can you do?’.
“And then you bit me. . .?”

Summary
Agatha and Rio, once inseparable childhood sweethearts, took different paths — one chasing city dreams, the other finding comfort in farm life. Agatha left; Rio stayed.
Now, as Agatha faces her past choices and sacrifices, she sees how much they’ve both changed. The love they once shared feels distant, and they hardly recognize each other.
What carries the greater pain: The past abandoned for an uncertain future, the present that turned out to be empty and agonizing, or the realization of what life could have been?
