‘Mycroft’s right,’ he said at last. ‘If I can get deeper into the complex, I can end this now. Today. If I leave, it will just come back to haunt us.’
‘Yeah, us. Sherlock, please. We can fix this together once you’re back home.’
That voice returned him to the rooftop of Bart’s. It hurt more than he would ever admit, jagged and raw. He still remembered it like yesterday. The desperation in John’s voice echoed down through his bones. John, the real John, had lost him that day. Now this figment looked at him with dawning realisation. He knew Sherlock would not turn his back on this chance.
He could not return to John knowing this mess remained unfinished. He could not return to London and expect forgiveness if the ruse had no reason.
