Truth be told, having Jiang Wanyin braid his hair is not an entirely unwelcome idea. It’s…intimate, yes, to have one's hair handled by another, but it’s not unheard of, and Xichen is quite legitimately interested in what appears to be a rather historical tradition for the Jiangs. However, this is the fearsome Sandu Shengshou, scourge of the Burial Mounds, a man who rebuilt his sect upon the ashes of his ancestors. Surely he cannot mean to waste his time on a passing whim like this?

Xiao Xingchen expects that the sudden voice in his ear is meant to startle him. However, one does not walk the earth for as long as he has without developing a sixth sense for when someone is trying to unnerve him. One can soften their step and slow their breathing, much as this mysterious stranger appears to have done today, but it’s tricky to erase the signs of one’s presence completely.
The stranger is good, but Xiao Xingchen is better. He does not even flinch.

Wei Ying.
Never before has Lan Zhan met someone so difficult to ignore. She’d had no issue with the other girl joining the fencing club, nor with her constantly recruiting strays to bring along to the regular evening sessions with her. In fact, when she had started actually applying herself and demonstrating some real skill with an epee, Lan Zhan had been able to admit that she was a good fit for the club. What Lan Zhan does have an issue with is that with her constant teasing, crude jokes, and crass humour that’s often aimed in her direction, Wei Ying has a way of making her feel unbalanced, like she’s teetering on a cliff’s edge staring down into an abyss that she can’t quite comprehend.
Lan Zhan does not like to make a habit of feeling unbalanced.

Summary
He knows the effect he has on children. Lan Zhan knows he is not a warm person, or particularly gentle, or even pleasant to be around, always. Perhaps this is why his younger shidi seem to fall in line quickly when he walks by, their sword forms tightening, their whispers cutting off mid-conversation. He does not mean to be frightening, but by this point, he cannot help it. Therefore, he expects one of two outcomes: for Lan Yuan to correct his behavior and fall in line, or for him to start sobbing and require removal from the dining room.
What he does not expect is for Lan Yuan to open his mouth and start shrieking like a demon.
