Glancing over at Yelena, she is still reading whatever was sent to her. “What is it?”
Those green eyes flicker over towards Kate then, just as Yelena turns her phone away so Kate can't read it. “What does yours say?”
Kate shrugs, “you know, details about a thing…might be the same as your thing.”
“Maybe.” Yelena maintains eye contact and Kate finds herself getting lost again. Wanting to push and tease, to wipe that growing smirk off of Yelena’s mouth with her own. “Ava can be very detail oriented when she wants to be.”
“Yeah, yeah same…Kamala, details as big as the fists she can make, you know?”
Yelena shakes her head. “I don’t know that, actually. She doesn’t speak to me much.”
“Yeah you kind of intimidate her.”

And then, because Ava’s mouth hates her, she spoke out loud when Mary asked if Beatrice was seeing someone.
“Hopefully me.”
The room stilled and Ava was sure a needle could be dropped and the sound would be deafening. She briefly thought about jumping out the window to save herself the embarrassment, but thought better of it when she realized she was still hooked up to the machine.
“Excuse me?” Beatrice was the one who broke the silence. Her tone wasn't harsh or judgmental, simply baffled and slightly amused.
This was probably a good time for her brain to think of an explanation or excuse, but all that came out of her mouth was “Uhm what?”
Mary laughed from her place slightly behind Beatrice. “Oh babygirl, you're gonna have to do better than that.”

In spite of her wealth, beauty and brains, Anin was kind. She was polite and pleasant all around, always eager to listen, always eager for a good laugh. Her intelligence shone through the words she spoke. She was the type of girl Pin believed everybody would want to be friends with, and it puzzled her that Anin had somehow chosen her. As the weeks began to slip by, Pin’s gratitude grew like roots in rich soil, anchoring her to the truth of what Aunt Patt had told her: to find a friend in Anilaphat might do her some good.
She hadn’t known it back then, but this would be her greatest understatement.
