YOU: The wings startle you all over again. Kim is still sitting where you’ve left him - on the edge of your bed, head bowed. His left wing nearly obscures his face. When you come into the bedroom, he picks his head up rapidly.
YOU: “Kim, can I see your wing?” A pause as he watches you. “Please?”
KIM KITSURAGI: He slowly turns his back to you. You can see the jut of his spine, a white scar on his lower back. The muscles in his shoulders are extremely tight.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: He could really use a massage. Imagine carrying all that weight around, folded up, all the time.
SUGGESTION: Can’t believe I’m saying this, but - maybe not the time.
KIM KITSURAGI: The great wings erupt from his shoulder blades. The right one hangs lower than the left, dragging slightly on the bed.
EMPATHY: It hurts.
VISUAL CALCULUS: Lining up perfectly with the gunshot wound you knew about, his right wing is gouged, scabbed over with a thick crust of blood. Around it, mangled and ruffled feathers, broken and bent.
YOU: You settle on the bed behind him, legs crossed, first-aid kit to your side and bowl of water to your side.
EMPATHY: You should probably warn him.
YOU: “Kim, I’m going to be really careful, but… I have to clean this, and I think it’s going to hurt.

CONCEPTUALIZATION: A warm, feathery blanket.
HALF LIGHT: You feel safe. Protected.
KIM KITSURAGI: His breathing slows - evens - deepens-

YOU: So do you.
