Bolstered at finding that she can in fact do good work in the care and keeping of a Joel, she decides to expand her bag of tricks.
Unfortunately, there’s one area that she knows is most important in keeping Joel safe, in knowing that she can take care of him if she needs to.
It just happens to be an area that sends her into panic attacks of her own.

“I thought you were gonna be mad at me,” she says, flicking her eyes up to him briefly before looking back to the snowglobe, giving it another shake, this one more restrained.
“I get why you wanna go out,” he says, sitting back. Apparently they’ll be having this little chat entirely in the hallway. “I’m not going to let you, but I get why you want to.”
She bites the inside of her cheek, thoughtful.
“You promise you’re not mad?” She asks. It’s not the first time he’s been asked this question. He’s pretty sure it won’t be the last.
“Promise,” he tells her. “Already forgotten.”
She looks at him then, a studying sort of look, and then she smiles.
“That’s just because you’re getting senile,” she says, like the little shit she is.
Perhaps he should reconsider letting her off the hook so easily.

Summary
The butterfly leads him on a path that makes him smile, weaving around trees and clambering up rocks the way he did when Sarah was small enough that some of her climbs left her stranded. It’s utterly senseless, the same route Sarah would pick when he wasn’t chiding her to stay on the trails. The butterfly never leaves his sight, like it’s waiting for him to catch up, and he can almost hear Sarah calling “C’mon slowpoke!” through the trees as he follows the little yellow dot. His throat feels tight, but he feels lighter than he has in years, playing this stupid game.
He snorts when the butterfly disappears around a tree. Sarah used to love darting around trees to jump out at him, so he jogs to catch up, and in his stupid whimsy, swings himself around-
And finds himself face to face with a small teenager with a gun.
(alternate meeting in which joel goes to make another suicide attempt and instead finds an injured ellie)

Without a second thought, he'd wrapped his coat around the girl's shoulders and led her upstairs to the car. He sat her in the passenger seat and cranked the heater before radioing the station. She didn't say a word on the drive. When they'd gotten back to his office, Joel wasn't even sure she was listening to his questions. "Where do you live?," he asked. "Nowhere," she said. After maybe an hour of dodging questions, she left.
"If I'm not under arrest, then I can leave."
Joel couldn't argue with the facts. He saw her buying a soda at the vending machine on her way out.
