Après le retour d’Aubrey Hall (et la demande en mariage à Edwina), Kate se sent de plus en plus mal. Elle essaye de faire bonne figure mais son cœur est brisé, la pression de la société londonienne est constante et inévitable, elle ne peut s’emde penser à Anthony, sans oublier l'accord passé avec les Sheffield.
Et puis elle reçoit un paquet en provenance d’Inde, avec une lettre. Et pour la première fois depuis des années, Kate craque et se met à pleurer.
Dans le salon de Lady Danbury.
Devant sa mère, sa sœur et Lord Bridgerton !Anthony est bouleversé par les larmes de Kate. C’est comme un électrochoc. Il décide qu’elle ne doit plus jamais se retrouver dans une position où elle craque. Alors il change les choses...

Partie 1 : Marta et Ransom se rencontrent plusieurs fois avant l’anniversaire fatidique d’Harlan. Beaucoup de choses changent.
Partie 2 : Harlan meurt de vieillesse à l'hôpital, à 87 ans, c'est-à-dire 2 ans après avoir annoncé à Ransom qu’il avait déshérité toute sa famille au profit de Marta. En 2 ans beaucoup de choses se sont passées, et la famille Thrombey se réunit pour la lecture du testament. Tout le monde, même Ransom, est surpris par cette lecture.
Du point de vue de Ransom (Marta est importante mais souvent secondaire dans l’intrigue). Beaucoup d'introspection et un super humour.
