    “He took it real hard, Chris. When you stepped through the door and tried to leave us forever, he was heartbroken, man. And I mean it. Heartbroken.” Her head bobbed with the last word, her eyes comically wide as if she was trying to mentally channel knowledge into Chris’ thick skull.

    It did not work. “I doubt it.” Chris laughed, feeling the back of his neck break into sweat. “He doesn’t function like that. He’s a fucking machine.”

    “He’s definitely something,” Ads said. “But he was sobbing. Ugly sobbing, into my neck. Like, torrential. He had a lot of shit bottled up.”

    “Adrian doesn’t cry.”

    “He does now,” Ads said. “Over you."

    Adrian hadn't called. He hadn't texted. Not since Chris had got back in one piece from the other dimension. And all Chris could think about, after Ads had brought it up, was that he'd made him cry.

    He mindlessly walked towards the van, eyes on Adrian who hung limply in his grip, looking more lifeless than Chris had ever seen him. He’d always walked it off, ever since he was a little kid landing to the ground with a harsh thud after Gut had pushed him. He was tough as shit, he’d never complain, even when he was shot. Chris never expected much recovery time from him after missions, even after the worst of the worst. 

    But now, Adrian’s right arm was dangling uselessly next to his body, breathing barely visible. Behind his mask, his eyes were closed, eyelids not even fluttering. Chris felt his chin tremble.

    Adrian was going to be fine, he had to be fine. He was always fine.
