Summary
He finds the little girl–scarcely more than a toddler–huddled with her mother’s already-cold body on patrol that day.
She’s so small he hadn’t even seen her at first, and he about jumped out of his skin when tugging up the edge of the woman’s coat had revealed a little face looking up at him, big eyes looking as startled as he’d felt. He’d caught himself before a reflexive punch, but the near-baby looking at him had still whimpered, pressing as close to her mother as she could get.
Her mother, already going stiff in death.
“Hey there, darlin’,” he says softly, lowering himself from a squat to sit on the ground so he won’t look quite so large to such a tiny little thing. “You’re alright.”
The only response is a whimper as the girl tries to tuck herself tighter against her mother’s body.

“Are you in trouble? Back home?”
The ends of her sweatshirt are grasped in her fists, wrapped around her hands. He half expects her to pull the hood up, tie the strings over her face, and completely tuck herself away. It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.

Ellie's a foster kid who helps herself to the bed of Joel's truck to get where she needs to go. Joel is a sucker who just can't turn her away.

“I was just…I was wondering what you do. You know. For like…punishment.” She interrupts him. She needs to get the answer already, needs to know what to expect before she drives herself crazy with anticipation.
“Well I was more into grounding than goddamn child abuse.”
“Grounding like…” Her face scrunches in confusion as she dares to look at him. The word is foreign and the best guess she has doesn’t seem right, but she also doesn’t know what else it could be. “Like being…in the ground?”
Joel stares at her for a long, long moment before he speaks.
“Jesus fucking Christ.”
(after they settle into jackson, ellie realizes she doesn't know how joel will punish her if she messes up) (it quickly becomes a problem she needs to solve)

As the (alleged) daughter of the new president, Ellie Wiliams is hellbent on making herself as much of a nuisance as possible. Joel Miller, the virtually unreadable and perpetually grumpy bodyguard assigned to watch her for eighteen hours a day, certainly thinks she's doing a good job of it. But as Ellie processes losses of her past and present, she slowly begins to realise just how valuable it can be to have someone watching your back.

Just a regular day, but they were the days Ellie liked the most.
Then Tommy came over.
That, in itself, wasn’t the problem. The problem was the fact that he had interrupted their breakfast by pounding on the door like someone was dying. Ellie flashed a look to Joel, but he was already standing, looking slightly worried as he walked toward the front door just beyond the kitchen. Tommy beat him to it, opening their front door just as Joel reached it.
“Joel.”
The word was spoken with such soft desperation that Ellie was on her feet in an instant. Something was wrong, something was happening, and whatever it was had Tommy shaken enough to say Joel’s name like that.
“Joel. There’s a woman at the gate.”
(Or Sarah lives! somehow! And Ellie is forced to realize her place besides Joel now that his REAL daughter is home)
