A much younger Edward Teach had asked little enough of life: warmth, sufficient food, a kindly touch rather than a blow or a slap. Older now, he no longer has to worry about hunger, and need for “food” has become desire for “good food”—sweet things, fine French brandy. Bravado and experience have transformed his craving for simple kindness into one for sexual satisfaction. But warmth… The boy he once was—hungry and like as not bruised by his father’s fist—had spent too many nights shivering in back alleys or wrapped in a thread-bare rag of a sheet on a narrow pallet in a succession of the ever cheaper, more drafty hovels that he and his parents mockingly called home. Edward Teach still hates the cold.
If Izzy were there with him…
But Izzy isn’t.
Ed curses the chilly morning, pulls the blankets around himself even more tightly, and tries to go back to sleep, hoping the nightmares will leave him alone.
