Tenko has always been fascinated by the creatures that lurk in the dark. Most think the deep sea animals at the aquarium are ugly, creepy, and gross, but the gloved boy always felt like he belonged more with them than the playful dolphins or the colorful fish in the coral reef exhibits. More akin to the leggy spider crabs than the almost round fiddler crabs.
Then he sees a flash of color in the tank, a vivid violet that never should have existed in such a dark environment where everything glowed garishly white in the black light. Eyes looking back out at him from behind a hide, hair floating around an almost elf-like face with pointed ears and lightly fluttering gills.
He’d never thought he’d see a mer in real life, they were rare to exhibit, rarer still in the wild, and they never lasted long in captivity if they had a strong will.
Suddenly Tenko finds he has a new favorite in the waters that had been his home away from home as long as he could remember, and the other boy doesn’t seem to mind his company either. -
