Summary
To die without dying, one must give up their life for a long period of time. For Sherlock Holmes, it was necessary to sacrifice himself for 2 whole years. The spider was long gone, but it's web still remains-- ensnaring the innocents unfortunate enough to fly into it's path. Innocents that Sherlock vowed to protect.
But to stay alive without a life of your own is quite a task on it's own-- from the moment he'd escaped the falls it'd been a cold, heartless existence which the detective trekked through, all violently fixated on one point, each step a careful calculation. He couldn't allow himself to feel, to worry, to wonder-- to be weak in situation requiring as much care as this- it couldn't happen. It would *ruin* him, and everything he loved.
There were very few moments when his heart and mind fell away from the clinical precision of the task at hand. Very few.
But not none.

Milverton picked up a spoon, dipped it into the porridge, blew gently on the rising steam, then raised it with patient care, as though he were a devoted caretaker. He brought the spoon close to William's lips. This time, William parted his mouth slightly, whether from reflex of a weakened body or from yielding at last to Milverton's pressure.
The spoon entered, the warm porridge sliding over his tongue. Its taste was bland, nearly without memory. But William swallowed slowly all the same.
Milverton smiled with satisfaction at this rare moment of obedience.
"There, that's better. You see? Not so difficult."
William's body was gaunt, worsened after his critical state. His collarbones jutted sharp beneath his skin, his long fingers frail like dry twigs ready to snap. Now and then, a faint cough revealed that his lungs were failing under the cold air. They both knew that if William simply died, it would mean Milverton's defeat in controlling him.
