Before all this, Derek Hutchins spoke five languages. He mentions it the way he mentions most things, incidentally, between bites of rice, as if it is a fact that requires no particular emphasis.
Avery puts down his fork.The next eight hours go like this: Avery pointing at things and saying what's that in French, Derek answering without looking up, and Avery losing his mind about it in small, incremental, well-documented steps. The Indonesian part is its own category of problem entirely.

The robot on the kitchen table does nothing except spin in a perfect circle.
Avery stares at it for four minutes.
Derek watches him from the doorway and says nothing.The thing about living with someone who builds tiny robots and skateboards is that eventually one of you is going to suggest swapping. This is Avery's fault. Derek will argue, correctly, that it was a logical inevitability. Both of these things are true.
(or: Avery burns himself twice with a soldering iron and Derek falls off a skateboard fourteen times and calls each one a temporary inefficiency. The eleventh second changes something.)

Summary
Derek is a reasonable person. This is not arrogance. This is simply accurate, supported by significant evidence, including but not limited to: decoding a cipher stack in seventeen minutes, outmaneuvering a cosmic entity, and surviving six weeks of Avery.
The six weeks are the hard part.
Avery touches Derek's arm when he's saying something important. He leans across him and stays 1.8 seconds longer than the task requires. He says you have very nice eyes in a kitchen on a Wednesday like it's a weather report. He says I really like your face and goes back to his book.Derek has a catalogue. Forty-three instances. He is managing this. He goes to the kitchen a lot. He has consulted Hastur about it. Hastur was not helpful.
On a Thursday in May, Derek says: Avery, I need you to know that when you do that, I find it very difficult to think clearly.Avery, it turns out, has a folder on his phone. It's called derek says things. It has forty-seven screenshots. The number keeps going up.
(for the record: they were both managing. they were both very bad at it. the restraint is now concluded.)
