Summary
Rey has always hated Ben, and it’s always been easy to hate Ben. But at the beginning of sixth year Ben is suddenly tall, handsome, and when he’s looking at her like that she can’t help this fluttering feeling inside. It definitely didn’t help that when she first saw him she had worn the one skirt that had shrunk in the dryer...
Ben was trying hard not to think about Rey all summer, but when she showed up wearing that skirt, now she is all he can think about. And he’s having an incredibly hard time pretending to hate her. Especially now that they’re partners in Charms.

But before she can take the trials, she must apprentice to an older Knight, and she has been chosen by none other than the dark, stoic, and mysterious Sir Kylo Ren, King Snoke’s protege and the strongest knight in the Empire.

“You know what? I don’t have time for this. Just leave, I’m keeping the plants.” He told her firmly, placing the two pots in his hand on the counter with an air of finality, refusing to break eye contact. She looked aghast.
“You can’t just keep these! They’re for Finn!” She said angrily. Her face was scrunched up in annoyance and one of her sleeves was slipping down her right shoulder, bearing tanned and freckled skin that Kylo’s eyes took in greedily. She glared at him and plopped a pot of hanging succulents down onto the counter top to yank the fluttery sleeve back onto her shoulder.
“They’re in my trailer, they’re mine now.” He told her, crowding into her space while grabbing the other pot in her hand. He yanked it from her grip and placed it on the table. She gasped.
“You don’t even want them!” She cried indignantly.
“I do now.” He said in a deep voice, reaching his fingers up to fix her sleeve that had somehow slipped down again.

“The Resistance would never trust you enough to agree to negotiations,” she told him after a few minutes.
“It is fortunate, then, that I have no intention of negotiating with anyone. I will graciously offer up their General, and the Resistance will return my wife in exchange. There are no other options.”
Well, he could also kill them all and take his wife from the top of a hill of corpses…but that hardly needed being said. Besides, he was fairly certain that option wouldn’t endear him to his runaway bride. For this to be clean, he needed a fair exchange to occur.
He could see her starting to panic, her eyes darting around the corners of the small, stark room as she searched for an answer. She knew as well as Kylo did that the Resistance would do a lot to get Leia Organa back. Even sacrifice one of their own.
“Who…?” she asked at last, “Who is your wife?”

Rey turns around again, starting to descend the steps, leaving him alone in the temple. ‘You can’t be here. Go back to your sycophants.’
He stands up abruptly and she flinches, shying away. ‘Have we really regressed back to being enemies now? After all this time?’ He motions between them, to the ephemeral, unbreakable bond.
Rey faces him, her hazel eyes so full of sorrow; it pierces straight to the core of him, an arrow to the heart. ‘You made your choices. You chose the Dark, Ben. You chose to kill the rebels rather than help them. There’s nothing I can do to help you anymore. So yes, you’re my enemy. And you need to leave.’ She turns away again, starting down the flight of steps that lead away from the cliff. The water in the pool undulates as her footsteps peter out, and Kylo stares into the pool, at his reflection, the scarred, damaged face that doesn’t even come close to portraying the conflict within. The face of the First Order. He hates it more than he ever has.
