Indou Hikaru — a kid the antithesis of Yoshiki — had taken it upon himself to mend Yoshiki’s bloody fragments, getting cut and bruised from his blunt words and reserved nature, excusing it all with a snaggletooth-smile. Hikaru radiated childlike wonder so infectiously that Yoshiki would at times forget how painful reality was.
Maybe that's why Yoshiki found himself flailing blindly in the waters of his demise, his cuts opening up under the thing’s burrowed claws. No response could form on his lips that were trembling with grief. Yoshiki was about to die at the hands of his best friend’s corpse.
Hikaru was gone, and this Hikaru was a fake that…

Hikaru grabbed his hand under the table, interlocking their fingers. “I’m feeling hot all over, Yoshikiiii,” he complained, drawing out Yoshiki’s name.
Turning his attention from the book he’d been browsing back to Hikaru, Yoshiki could immediately tell something was wrong.
Flushed in the face, Hikaru seemed a bit out of it. The possibility of a heat stroke in rural Japan was at an all-time high but Yoshiki had the suspicion that wasn't it.
