Bilbo dies in Bofa and he revives some time later, having absorbed the One Ring's ability to turn invisible. Shenanigans ensue as Bilbo tries to hide from the dwarves so he can stay near them longer, and the company searches desperately for his body as well as revenge for whoever dared to meddle with their hobbit's final resting place.

"Bilbo woke up with a gasp, the normally comforting pressure and pulse of the earth feeling suffocating, Bilbo was suffocating. He clawed at the earth trying his best to reach the surface. Once he finally did he gasped loudly coughing the dirt he had inhaled once he started breathing again.
He wasn’t sure where he was but it was definitely inside the mountain, which was strange considering the disdain with which Thorin had regarded him the last time they had seen each other, at least before the battle."

Бильбо знает, что гномы - упрямые существа, и нет никого упрямее Торина. Но никто не говорил, что сам Бильбо был не менее упрям, чем его любимый муж.
Поэтому он последует за своим самым дорогим гномом через всё Средиземье, через равнины, горы и леса, скрывая при этом истинную природу их отношений (политика гномов еще никому не помогала), залечивая старые раны (и нанося новые) и узнавая что-то новое о гноме, которого Бильбо называет своим мужем (и о его большой семье).

"Oh, my dear Frodo, my dear boy how could I have let him go off just like that! With my terrible, cursed ring?!"
His feet stumble on the carpet and Thorin lurches forward to grasp the halfling by the shoulder. He's gentle, worried that he may snap the frail Bilbo in two if he pulls him back too hard. There's a stuttered sigh and Bilbo eases back into the taller dwarf; Thorin can remember a time where the hobbit's head would be held at least as high as his shoulder, but at one-hundred-and-twenty-eight, the halfling now bowed lowly at the breastplate of his shining, royal armour.
"Easy, ghivashel," he says softly to him, and cautiously turns the hobbit so he can look him directly in those remarkable honey-brown eyes, "I will follow their trail and make sure that no harm comes to the boy."
Bilbo sniffs. "You will keep an eye on Frodo?"
"You have my word."
(Bagginshield, in which King Thorin II is unknowingly the father to the plant-grown dwobbit Frodo Baggins. After years away from one another, Thorin returns at an ageing Bilbo's bidding to go after Frodo on his journey to destroy the One Ring and see that he is safe and brought home.)

Forced to flee in exile, Bilbo reluctantly takes Frodo across Middle-earth, searching for answers as he is chased by agents of the Shadow, unaware of the value of the little gold ring he carries with him.
What Bilbo also doesn't know however is that far to the East, in the Lonely Mountain, someone he'd believed gone to him forever is not as lost as he thought.
