Summary
It was hard keeping it a secret, but it's hard when everyone knows. Charles had seen his fathers blood in him his whole life. It was harder when it felt like everyone else could see it too. But, it was difficult to fight, in the end. It's the reason why a weapon fits in his hand the way a lantern fits in Edwins, the reason anger burns in him like hellfire.
In the end, he was his fathers son.
(The one where Charles talks about a lot. Life, death, music, parenthood. He learns a lot too. Learning how to be happy could be one of them. Learning to be loved is another. Edwin is a wonderful teacher.)

Summary
Suo Gân
Welsh, meaning “lullaby”
suo = lull; cân = songBut this is not my mother.
This looks nothing like my mother. When asked where I am from,
what can I possibly say?
I am you, in part, I suppose
I want to say, but I don't.— Erika L. Sánchez, from Lessons on Expulsion: Poems; “Crossing”
“I have my father's nose and all his rage, but I have my mother's face and her grief. / Rage, I have learned to wear. My mother's grief, however, folds my spine and lives beneath my ribs. It gets heavier and heavier.”
— Fatima Aamer Bilal
Mary now speaks to Christ:
‘Are you my son?—or God?
You are nailed to the cross.
Where lies my homeward road? How can I close my eyes,
uncertain and afraid?
Are you dead?—or alive?
Are you my son?—or God?’Christ speaks to her in turn:
‘Whether dead or alive,
woman, it’s all the same—
son or God, I am thine.’— "Nature Morte.", Joseph Brodsky (tr George L. Kline)

Summary
“Charles,” Edwin said. Then, louder, when Charles only nodded in response, “Charles! I’m sorry. I—”
“Edwin, don’t. Don’t you dare—”
“I sincerely wish we could have been friends for longer,” he said.
Charles looked crushed before he’d even finished speaking. He tried to get a better hold on Edwin’s suit jacket, but he had no footing, dangling in the middle of the train as he was.
Edwin let go.
Or: When David the Demon opens a portal on the train in an attempt to escape being exorcised from Crystal, Edwin gets inadvertently dragged back to Hell, leaving Charles and Crystal behind.

Summary
“Hate to break it to you, Harrington,” Billy grins, all teeth, like a shark smelling blood in the water. “But you’re not king anymore.”
Steve stares back at him coolly. “Think you’re the only one who can stage a coup?”
The night the Gate is closed, Steve goes to Tommy H.'s house. In the aftermath, he reclaims his crown, adopts a pack of eighth-graders, fights Billy Hargrove (again) and somehow, finds himself on the path to understanding the word family.
