    "You didn't ruin anything, dear," she says. He knows if he hadn't apologized, her tone would be different, and she likely had a lecture all planned out. He stopped it in its tracks and they're both glad for it. "How have you been?"

    He lifts the wine to his lips and tries not to gag at the smell of alcohol. It's getting easier the further he gets from that night, but if he closes his eyes he's right back there lying on his scotch soaked carpet breathing in the fumes as he bleeds out. "I don't know."
