Wilbur was being followed.
In theory, that may have been upsetting, but in practice, he wasn’t actually too bothered. Especially considering that his pursuer was a teenager and not particularly good at going unnoticed.
Wilbur waited until he’d made it to deserted street before turning around. “You’ve been following me.”
The kid stumbled back, obviously startled, but to Wilbur’s surprise, he didn’t seem scared.
In fact, he recovered quickly enough to say, “You’re a vampire.” It wasn’t a question. He was staring at Wilbur, but it wasn’t in disbelief. Instead, his blue eyes were calculating.
“Yes,” Wilbur said slowly, taking in the light flush of the boy’s cheeks. “You’re not.”
“Nope,” the kid said, shoving his hands into his pocket. “You wanna work out a deal?”
Or, Tommy's in a bad spot, spots Wilbur the Friendly Vampire, and decides that he can scam him. Instead, he gets adopted.

“You’ve been working a job? How long are your shifts?”
“Uh, like 8 to 9?” Tommy scratched the back of his neck, instantly cringing at the feel of his unwashed hair.
Wilbur’s shoulders sagged in relief, and he laughed lightly. “Oh! 8 to 9 isn’t that bad. That's actually kinda short. As long as it’s not like, 8 in the morning to 9 at night. That’d be, that’d probably be illegal.”
But Tommy wasn’t laughing with him. No, he wasn’t even smiling. Phil and Wil shared a glance before Phil spoke up.
“Tommy. . . you’re not working 13-hour shifts, right?”
