Trying to ascertain what it is he wants her to say, she takes a moment first to read his eyes. “I’ve been with you almost the entire time sir.”
The visible tension in his body tells her that his emotions are still firmly fixed in pissed off mode. “Well, obviously not.”
Clearly something isn’t right.

“Nothing’s different,” Ellie tries to talk Joel off the ledge the best way she knows how. “Except that fucking…thing. It was different. It was smart. And I just thought…What if, ya know?”
Joel’s right in front of her. He sinks to his knees, which is honestly for the best before he passes out and knocks his head against the hardwood floors. “What are you asking me here, kiddo?”
The nickname tugs at years old memories, tussles with months old anger. Settles in her hours old desire to be held by him again. The desire she’s brushing off and shoving down. Even if she is going to die, it doesn’t mean Joel gets to be off the hook. All it means is that he’d ruined everything all so she could die in the name of fucking nothing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming instead.
Ellie squares her shoulders as she tilts up her chin. She holds him hostage with her gaze and implores him with the earnesty of her expression. “I need you to wait with me to see if I turn. And if I do,” she pauses, swallows, wishes she could look anywhere besides right into his eyes, “I need you to put a bullet in my head.”

“You wanna tell me about this infected you and Dina decided to lie to the council about?” Joel asks as he carefully guides the needle through her skin. She winces but doesn’t flinch, breathing through the pinprick of the needle each time it pokes through. “They clocked that immediately, by the way.”
“Council sessions are confidential,” she says dryly. “Privacy privilege to ensure honesty.”
They both look to the other and exchange a mutual raised eyebrows look about how that tends to go in practice given how quickly gossip spreads in Jackson, and for a moment, a single wonderful, fiercely addictive moment, they're a unit again. She's fifteen, she can tell herself he's never lied about anything except her birthday treat to keep it a surprise, and the only tension between them is the words they haven't put to what he is to her.
But the moment pops like a soap bubble, and she's nineteen and angry again, and the contentment fizzles to nothing like a sparkler burning out, leaving her blinking at black spots in the absence of its light.

He sits there on his heels, thighs burning with the prolonged hold, fingertips braced against the cold floor of the cave for balance, and wonders what he should say, what he should do. He’s not good at this. Ellie knows this; she’s not expecting him to do anything, and he pretends like this makes it easier for him to lie back down and listen to her cry in the damp darkness of the cave. She’s only cargo, he tells himself. Cargo doesn’t need comfort.

“Hey, kiddo,” he says, with no missing affection, “headin’ out for a bit. You, uh…interested in taggin’ along?” She seems to scrutinize him, eyes raking over his gun, his pack, the clear markers that he isn't just out for a casual morning stroll – and he steels himself for the familiar cocktail of disappointment and rejection; for the fabricated excuse as to why she can’t join him, the patrol shift she’ll claim she already has (she doesn’t; he’s already made sure). She leans against the doorframe for just a moment, arms crossed, and lets out a low, tired sigh.
“Yeah,” she says finally, shrugging. “Sure.”

Much like the other day, Ellie ends up sitting on the porch steps. Joel’s back even quicker this time. Almost like he’d left his first aid supplies sitting out and ready to attend as needed.
More cleaning, this one hurts less. More gel liquid, this time rubbed in a bit better. And more bandaids, these ones something other than plain, boring beige. Not princesses either, usually the first thing adults reached for when they mixed the two factors of Little Girl and Injured together.
Nope. This guy has dinosaur bandaids.
“Dude, I fucking love dinos!”
Joel’s head swivels up, eyes going from her carefully patched up elbow to meet Ellie’s gaze. She wants to ask him how he knew. She wants to ask to see the rest of the designs in the box. She wants to tell him all of the other things she loves.
“S’pose I picked right then,” he says, almost like he’d been standing in the aisle, contemplating what exactly that might be.
“You did,” is how Ellie answers him, not bothering with a thank you.
