The puzzle pieces judder together with horrifying clarity. Standing in the center of the room, she can see the full picture. Everything missing from the phone, the fragments of herself in the dorm, the odd inflection in Kris’ voice.
This isn’t a dream. It isn’t the Dark World. But it is, impossibly, an alternate world entirely.
Kris sighs again, muttering something to themself. “Do you need me to come over? Are you alone?”
“Kris, I think I’m in the wrong world,” she manages.

Kris looks at Noelle. They've been chewing on the last of the popcorn, the kernels that get stuck at the bottom of the bag and only half pop.
"You know," Noelle says, and gestures at the screen like they haven't spent the last few minutes in silence, watching a tough-yet-caring police officer string together the world's most obvious clues. "If you were a slasher movie villain, how would you kill me?"
Kris and Noelle have a spirited discussion about horror movies.

If there's going to be a fountain made years from now in some place, anything that would become a darkner is already aware of its surroundings.
So it's retroactive! Noelle saw that sort of thing in fiction sometimes, but she never expected it to actually be possible.
* Indeed. And! Doll's voice rose. * As it turns out, Darkners can take advantage of that non-linearity. If an object that's going to become a darkner in three days passes by an object that becomes a darkner tomorrow, the second darkner will have history with the first and know about them even before the first Darkner's fountain has been made. So any Dark World that will be made in the future always will be made, and you can determine what Dark Worlds will be made in the future by investigating the ones that already exist.

To sacrifice pride and dignity for the sake of those who may not deserve it by any metric we can envision. It also occurs to her, however, that if her goal is not to beat Kris, then her goal must be something closer to ‘romance Kris’ or ‘ask Kris out’, and that would be embarrassing; so, in actuality, she’s pretty sure she’s going about this the right way."
