"I heard you chatting with him until midnight. What can you discuss for an hour?" Jonathan asks ironically.
Will almost wants to strangle him.
"Graduation," he mutters, reaching for his brother's mug. John hands it over without resistance, and Will takes a sip — it burns his tongue and scratches his throat, because his brother has terrible taste in food: he drinks absolutely bitter black coffee without sugar or milk, he doesn't eat any chocolate except dark, and he hates strawberry smoothies. He's probably the most bitter-tasting person Will knows, because even Hopper drinks his coffee with sugar.
"What's wrong with it?” Jonathan asks, rising from his chair. He reaches into the refrigerator for a loaf of bread and peanut butter, and Will realizes he's already gone to the store. It's six in the morning. Will can barely keep his eyes open.
That's a good question. Will asked Mike the same question yesterday.”

The summer of 1989 is his last chance to start over. Graduation and then college in New York await Will, but there's something he hasn't yet accomplished. So Will tries to overcome his fears before his life starts anew, and gets what he always wanted: Mike Wheeler.

"I'm not afraid of death," Mike says immediately, opening his tear-filled eyes. "I mean, I don't want to die," he immediately corrects. "I just don't want to leave you, you know? I'm so afraid of losing you, but the worst thing would be if I left you. Alone."
Will sniffles. He exhales shakily and gently tucks the boy's hair behind his ears.
"I'll always be with you," Will says, pressing a kiss to Mike's wet cheekbone. "And you'll always be with me." He turns Mike's face and kisses his other cheek, and Mike pouts, realizing his kissing direction is about to change. But Will pulls back and looks into his eyes. "We swore, remember?"

Mike returns from a hike with a cursed mark that drives Will crazy with worry, and then reveals the true purpose of the route change.

Summary
It’s just that Mike is kind of notorious for being late to everything – he’s late to school nearly every morning now that Nancy’s gone to college and the Byers have moved out; he’s late to Hellfire so much that Dustin has threatened to give his seat away; hell, he’s even late for dinner nearly every night and all that requires of him is walking up or down a single flight of stairs. His mom swears he does it on purpose but he’s adamant that he doesn’t. He doesn’t, he’s just prone to getting lost in his thoughts or in his writing. He just gets sidetracked. He’s just a boy, that’s normal.
But now he’s realizing that he got so sidetracked that he’s tragically late to his own coming out party.
OR mike is pretty sure he’s gone crazy. like, diagnosably. and it doesn’t seem like will gets it so he has to figure out how to, like, show it. fuck.
