Summary
The boy climbing over the wall is clearly, straightforwardly breaking the rules, even before Lan Wangji sees the jars of alcohol he carries. When caught, though, he laughs — and for a moment, Lan Wangji can do nothing but stare, because despite the vague sense of disconnection that has lingered all day, here is someone fully, entirely real.
Oh, he thinks, and the sense of loss that has been weighing him down begins to lift.
Lan Wangji has his regrets about things he did and did not do, and he tried not only to do better when he got another chance, but to become someone who would not have made what he considers to be his original mistakes with the information he had at the time. So did he succeed?
(The answer given here is ‘Yes, and this can be contrived to plausibly make things better rather than worse.’)

Summary
There is a boy with a red ribbon in his hair, with fire and valour in his heart. At the end of the story, he dies (repeat ad infinitum).
There is a boy with(out) a blue ribbon. He is made of broken glass; bleeding edges and distorted reflections. He holds love in his chest, he holds love like a bullet lodged in his chest. The ink on his contract is dry– but his fingers drip black; stained from rewriting the fates of others. At the end of the world he stands in the water and says– my soul, my body, my mind, but not my heart.
There is a valorous boy in a red ribbon. He is a puppet on a string. He is the gear that turns the fates of others. If he makes a contract he’ll end the world. If he makes no contract the world will end. He stares across the water at a love he has no memory of. He stares up at the shattered sky. He stares into himself and says, swallow down your hesitation– what will you wish for?
(You can only repeat a story so many times)

I appreciate the existence of this story so much it's wonderful; also, the second chapter absolutely destroyed me, and I needed to put some serious attention into emotional management to stop it from really fucking me up; both these things are true. also thank goodness for the sequel/epilogue

When Wei Ying jumped and wrapped his arms around the Moon, he hadn't known what would happen.
But had you asked him to guess, he would not have guessed this.
He shook the dizziness from his eyes, focusing on the shadowed face of a man. A man who was staring down at him, eyes wide with surprise, though he couldn't be more shocked than Wei Ying who, even over a decade later, would never forget that face.

the one background societal difference very believably changes everything. also a cool version of the sunshot campaign. also neat how LQY and QS share a sort of idealism, and WQ and JYL a sort of ruthless practicality
