It’s far too noisy in here, almost like a physically oppressive thing. It makes Eddie’s skin feel funny, like it’s too tight and wants to vibrate right off his body.
It’s way better at the bar, away from the dance floor. Too close to the speakers and the music rattles Eddie’s chest, makes it feel like his heart is pulsing to the music. The air in his lungs is thudding along with the beat. It’s bearable, for a little while, but Eddie’s been here for a couple of hours now and he can feel himself hitting his limit. He keeps one hand in his pocket so he can pull on the loose strands there; letting them slide against the pads of his fingers, again and again. He wriggles his toes in his boots; it gives him another sensation to focus on.

“What happened to you?” Harrington asks with a furrow between his brows.
Billy blows smoke into his face. “None of your fucking business.” He can’t even find joy in the way that Steve’s nostrils flare and he instantly starts coughing. “Asshole,” he tacks on, just to feel something.
“You’re the asshole,” Steve counters, crossing his arms. “You disappear for four years and show up looking like that,” he looks Billy up and down.
“Rude,” Billy sneers, because he knows he looks great today. “This shirt-” he cuts himself off. How can he casually mention that the button down he’s wearing cost his sugar daddy two hundred dollars?
Steve gives him a look like he knows what he was about to say.

Billy shoves off his jean jacket and gestures at his arm, revealing three bands that grow thicker as they stack. Two are dull like aged tattoos, but the top one, the thickest one, weeps red. He points at the thinnest, the bottom one, and says, “A mate mark,” then the next, “Werewolf,” then the next, “Alpha.”
Steve doesn’t laugh, although he feels like it’s burbling on the edge of his tongue, unhinged and wanting. “I’m not a werewolf.”
“And I wasn’t an alpha. Human mates in packs are rare, but they happen.”
