Summary
Dax wakes up alone in the dark. Bit by bit, it pieces together details about itself and its history: an away mission gone awry, a vast host organism it thinks of as the world, and two voices from the outside--chipper, self-assured Blue and prickly Red, whose connection to the host organism intrigues and puzzles the symbiont. But all, it learns, is not well with the world. Red and Blue must to fight to save the host, and their bond with Dax, before the time limit runs out. Because, as Red would say, it's Starfleet--there's always going to be an improbable time limit.

The chair in front of Ro’s desk is taken, and its occupant is observing Kira with an air of mild amusement. An elderly woman, a Romulan with bronze skin and grey hair in a bowl cut, wearing roughly replicated clothing. She clutches a metallic cane with a wooden handle. “I’m not proud of the deception regarding the hospital on Derna, Colonel,” she mutters after a few moments. Kira almost scoffs at that, but then Cretak’s eyes are suddenly on her again. “Believe it or not, I wasn’t completely aware of the scope of that operation. But I did what I had to do.”
“We all did, it seems.” Kira doesn’t try to keep the bitterness out of her words.
After Derna, Kira's conflict with Cretak is far from over. (Set in an AU where Kira and Odo aren't in a romantic relationship.)
