And plenty of men would love to see me dead, but it’s been years since any of them last dared to look at me with such obvious intent.”

Kiryu screwed his lips into a grimace and stiffened in discomfort at the title. Next to him, Yayoi took another drag in a vain effort to hide her amused smile. Daigo recalled, belatedly, the difficulty with which he’d persuaded the man to call him something other than young master.
“You haven’t really sworn up yet, so I don’t think…” Kiryu started.
“Okay, well, I’ll still take whatever jobs you give me, Kiryu-san,” Daigo said.

Kazuma Kiryu. Dead in Onomichi with his ashes interred in Naha and his ghost lingering in a temple garden on the outskirts of Yokohama. Darker beneath his eyes, more creased above his brow, brushed with stray hints of white around his temples and down his thick sideburns, clad in a samue instead of a suit, but still unmistakably himself.
Hanawa took a breath. “Why on earth are you dressed like that?” he demanded.
“I’m here to free myself from worldly desires,” Kiryu said, turning his gaze back to the garden.

“It’s a completely different life out here. I didn’t think about sharing it with anyone until I thought I might not see it again, and then…” Saito paused to focus on putting one foot in front of the other, still bracing himself with his uninjured arm slung heavily over Okita’s shoulders, trying not to let his companion see the way he winced with every step. “…I wished I’d had a chance to cook a meal for you, with everything pulled fresh from the garden.”
There was a small part of Okita that was still disgustingly soft despite his best efforts. He felt it melting in the warmth of Saito’s proclamation, and he did his best to ignore it. “You can cook?” he demanded incredulously.
“I’m very good at it,” Saito said with the casual immodesty of someone who probably was.
Okita shook him just a little. “You were holdin’ out on me with that, too!”

Shishido rolled onto his side with his cheek resting on his palm and flashed Kiryu a broad smile. “Well, if it ain’t Kiryu-chan!” he drawled, giving the kakemawari a languid wave with his snakeskin-printed sleeve, as if he’d decided to make his home there among the spilled art supplies and smashed-up pottery and was greeting an unexpected houseguest.
“Shishido…?” Kiryu lowered his blade and squinted at him. “What are you doing here?”
The answer was so painfully obvious that Shishido was immediately struck with a desire to be as annoying as possible about it. “What’s it look like?” he demanded, then laid a hand on his chest. “Same thing as you: I’m here to do a li’l modellin’.”
