His breath catches in his throat and his hands clasp tightly into fists. He could feel his nails digging into his palms - the pain grounding him. What was he supposed to say? How was he supposed to act? An image comes to mind of him standing stiffly in a suit, in the foyer of Ao’nung’s childhood home, forcing a smile in front of the Tsika’u and Sully adults while they snapped photos of them. Cold sweat had been running down his neck as he silently watched from the corner of his eye how Ao’nung clung tightly to a girl from their history class. She was stunning in her pale pink dress – a boutonniere of the same shade was pinned to Ao'nung's left lapel. He watched and said nothing as she giggled when Ao’nung playfully peppered her cheeks and shoulders with brief kisses, never once looking Neteyam’s way. He could only stand there and smile woodenly. It was one instance among a myriad of others, and Neteyam simply couldn’t pretend like that anymore. It hurt too much.
