Summary
And then the ghost of the thin gray youth was standing beside Lockwood and Marissa. Unseen forces wrenched them apart. Marissa was flung away. The skull’s spirit turned toward Lucy, giving her his old grin. “Brace yourselves,” he said.
As they flew back, Lucy saw the boiling plume of black and red expanding outward to engulf everything. It cut right through the figure of the youth with blinding speed.
She and Lockwood hit the elevator doors and lay crumpled together as the fireball ballooned over them. She felt its heat upon her skin as black smoke swelled around them. It was hard to breathe.
Her final sensation was relief that she could still feel Lockwood moving. Her final thought was that she’d left the skull’s ghost-jar lying on the table.
Then her consciousness tipped over and fell into darkness.

“I know. I bloody know. It doesn’t mean I have to like it. Lockwood’s going to kill us both when we get out of this,” George mumbled, and bless him for the faith he had in us actually escaping.
“You can blame me if you like. Technically, I’m the one who broke you out for a midnight stroll,” I shrugged, trying not to let my nerves show.
“Yes, well, of course I’ll have to blame you Lucy. I think we both know he’s not going to yell at you,” George raised his eyebrows at me knowingly. “You’re the favourite.”
I blushed, despite the cold. How I wished that were true.

Summary
Lucy often thinks that he must be sick of taking care of her time and time again. But he continues to show up for her, like he takes deep pleasure in it. She hasn’t had many people in her life like that.
As they’re approaching their street, she rests hers head on his shoulder and decides to voice her drunken thoughts. “You know what I like about you, Lockwood?”
“What’s that?”
“The shape of your heart.”
“What?”
“You take care of everyone around you and you don’t ask for anything in return. And I think that means your heart must not be shaped like a normal heart. It’s got to be like a Russian doll or something, the ones you take apart and find another one inside.”
“You think my heart is like a Russian doll?”
“It’s like you’re not even listening.”
