Summary
Daniel releases a breath before turning back to Max. The kid is pale, shaking like a leaf and staring past Daniel towards where his father just exited. “Max,” he goes to put a hand on his shoulder but decides against, letting the hand awkwardly fall back to his side. “Are you alright?”
“Why - why would you do that?” There's a heat behind the words Daniel hadn't been expecting.
“A thank you would suffice.” He can’t help but throw back. He’s not sure exactly what he had been expecting. Certainly not the kid to bow down and start praising his name. But he hadn’t been expecting hostility.
“Why would I- what did you do?” Panic is creeping in, and while Daniel would have expected it around the time that bright red handprint appeared on his face, now, when his father is actually gone?
---Daniel stands up for Max when Jos takes things too far. The result is... unexpected.

Summary
Max Verstappen learns early that survival is a helmet covering the softest parts of his face, a silence you don’t test, a love you earn by being compliant. Years later, the grid decides he’s too violent to be accepted, until the small wrongness of Max's actions begin to stack, and someone finally looks long enough to see what’s been hiding in plain sight. This is about the shape of a childhood you can’t outrun, and the terrifying and fragile beginning of Max being met with more instead of less.
Ok I was inspired by the song "forwards beckon rebound" by Adrianne Lenker so I wrote this using the lyrics to illustrate the progression of Max being abused all the way into F1 before the other racers begin to notice and eventually try to help him. It has the lyrics woven throughout, and if this isn't something your interested in, just ignore the lyrics they aren't really a big part of this and it can be read entirely independently from the song.
