Summary
In April 1431, the then-named Venice joins a merchant named Pietro Querini on what should have been a normal trip to the trade city of Flanders... However, due to some errors and storms along the way, the ship sinks, and their lifeboat drifts on the North Sea until they run ashore on Røst in northern Norway.
Norway takes the emaciated Venice into his home and helps him recover. While he does so, he experiences the different culture, the foreign language, and the unusual people in this dark and cold place. Venice starts to feel more than gratitude towards Norway, but for some reason Norway is keeping him at arm's length...

Nation names used for the most part. Once or twice Venice is referred to as Feliciano, and Norway is referred to as Einar.
