He knows the battle they're going into isn't one they might walk out of. Mike has been hiding for so long, but it seems it only made him miss the chance he had with Will.

Tar black hair decorates the span of his forehead, falling in short alluring curls—Will's heart flutters, despite the fact that it really can't, really shouldn't—and he just looks so pleased with himself, even if this is honestly, a terrible idea.
"Have you ever even been drunk?"
Mike shrugs, "well, not really. With saving the world and stuff, I haven't had the time, go figure."
On a sticky summer night, Will Byers is left alone in the basement.

Summary
He started to walk towards Will when he stopped in his tracks. “You’re wearing my jacket?” he asked in half a question half a statement. Pink started to creep up Will's neck as he averted his eyes from Mike's gaze. “Um yeah. I- you gave it to me yesterday and I forgot to give it back so I brought it with me but I guess I got cold or something I don't know. Sorry.” He was shy, and Robin could tell.
Mike stood still and took a long look at Will and his blush covered cheeks. He glanced up and down, taking him in. Robin shot him a look. A stop looking at your friend who's hopelessly in love with you because you’re giving him false hope and he's miserable kind of look.
“No, no it’s ok” he spat out quickly. “It looks better on you anyways,” he used a quiet voice, one that she had noticed was only reserved for Will. Robin looked at Will and saw his face turning even more red, and then back at Mike who was starting to turn the same shade of red as Will.
Or: 5 times people were scheming to get Mike and Will together +1 time they actually did.
