Without thinking, Peter hurls himself at the woman, shoving her forward and out of the way of the car. But his reaction time is a lot slower than usual—he can only blame it on the severe grogginess weighing on him like an anvil—and because of that, he’s not able to roll himself out of the car’s path in time. It slams into him with a sickening thud, and Peter hits the cement hard.

“Peter?” Tony manages between huffs and puffs as he tries to catch his breath, his body shaking with adrenaline. The kid looks…well, not okay, but not like he’s on the verge of death, either. Tony wonders if Karen reported something wrong. He and the A.I. are going to have a very long reprogramming session if so, because if she scared him out of his wits for a minor concussion, he’s going to be very upset.
But then Peter’s gaze lands on Tony, and his eyes widen in fear. He skitters backward, pressing himself against the wall of the building behind him and making himself small.
Tony starts forward, confusion wrapping around him. “Pete, what’s—”
Peter’s breath hitches fearfully. “Who—who are you?”

Pete really shouldn’t be bothering him right now. But something in Tony has him picking up the phone and sliding up to accept the call anyway.
“Okay, what’ve we got? Another big-time arms dealer? You fell in the lake again. No, wait—girl trouble.” Tony chuckles to himself. He waits for a response, but all he hears on the other end of the line is the sound of harsh breathing. “Kid, you there? Is this a butt-dial?”
A full thirty seconds of silence go by, and Tony is considering hanging up when he hears it.
“He—he’s dead,” Peter finally gasps out. “He’s dead. It’s my fault. My fault.”
