Summary
Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

Summary
Credence had first noticed him coming out of an alley -- noticed because it had just been a little odd. Men like him didn't come out of alleys. They walked down the streets with their shoulders back and their boots shined fit to be a mirror. They stepped out of glinting new cars and acted like they owned the streets they drove down. They didn't move like Graves did.
They never noticed Credence.

Jaded FBI special agent Percival Graves is tracking a series of brutal homicides when he discovers a young man at one of the crime scenes. Bruised and terrified, Credence Barebone has no memory of the crime he was witness to—which resulted in the deaths of his mother and sisters—and forms an attachment to his savior, Graves. After being discharged from the hospital, Credence moves in with the agent, and their bond grows stronger even as Percival’s investigation leads him to question Credence’s involvement in the increasing number of unsolved murders.

Nobody had noticed. Director Graves didn’t do close relationships, and Grindelwald had avoided, demoted, sent away anyone who might have. Locked in, powerless, humiliated...
"Seraphina will listen", he mutters between his teeth. "I'm going to take care of this."

It's late December, 1926, and Graves' first look at Credence Barebone takes place at the basement cells of the Woolworth Building. Stern and damaged and a life-long loner... Nobody is more surprised than himself when he decides to take the boy under his wing.

Grindelwald figures Credence is too old and damaged to be useful, but his genes are clearly strong. Graves' genes are pretty awesome too with wandless magic and whatnot. So he decides to make them do it and train their offspring as perfectly loyal soldiers.

“Are you out of your goddamn mind?” Graves asked.
Grindelwald sighed, as if he found Graves’ questions tedious. “I told you,” he said. “I’ve Seen your child. Together, the two of you will produce a wizard so powerful that the armies of the world will tremble before him. He will be the first and most honored among my generals, and together we will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for wizard-kind.”
“You know,” Graves said, conversational. “When I asked you if you were out of your goddamn mind, the short answer would have been to just say yes.”
