The mercenary let his actions speak for him. He gave Ayre a definite answer, one that involved putting his arm around her waist. She jumped–surprised at his touch–at once understanding why he had tolerated her countless antics.

It was a strange, soft emotion. It made her heart flutter.
Not nearly as strange as an independent mercenary and a voice in the Coral creating a virtual room for themselves, and populating it with ancient pastimes, but it came close. A body without a soul, and a soul without a body, finding what they lacked in the other.
In which escaping from reality is a dreamish drug. One that tends to the tender, gentle scars beneath the skin.
