    “I changed the batteries this morning,” his father says, casual, lifting the camcorder to flip the screen open. “Brought the good tape.”

    He peers into the viewfinder, checks something. Nods his head, just to himself. The tape loads with a click. The red light comes on.

    His father aims it at the water for a moment. Then moves it to the trees. Then down at Michael.

    Dry, “Smile.”

    The red light is steady. Blinking. Waiting.

    It, too, wants something from him.

    His father stiffens. “I said smile.”

    Michael stares at him for a moment. Then into the lense. And then he smiles.
